Travel Induced Stress – 4 tips to reduce the stress of traveling!

When you think about traveling, you probably think about getting away from all the stress that the world throws your way on any given day.  It’s a time to disengage and relax.  It’s a time to explore and experience different cultures.  This is what it is supposed to be.  The reality many of us face is this: traveling is stressful.

The causes of travel-induced stress are varied.  But there are some sound pieces of advice that can help you reduce stress on your next trip!

  • What you are looking for, you’ll find – This fundamental rule doesn’t just apply to travel.  It’s a universal principle.  In my prior post Philosophy of Travel – The Tetris Effect, I explore the idea that your mindset entering a trip plays a huge role in what you are going to experience.  If you enter a journey with a positive mindset, looking for the wonders and awesomeness that await you, chances are you’re going to find just that.  Before you embark, focus on the good.  It’s bound to follow you.
  • Be Prepared – A little forethought can go a long way.  You’re going to be leaving the comforts of your own home.  You’ll be stepping out of your comfort zone, even if you’re not venturing far from home.  If you are off to a foreign country or any place with a different culture and customs, that discomfort will likely be magnified.  Discomfort equals stress.  Do some research before you head out on your journey.  Knowing ahead of time that air conditioning in your soon to be hotel room isn’t customary in the country you’re heading to can head off a lot of disappointment once you arrive to find you’re not in the United States anymore.
  • Accept That Perfection Is Unattainable – I have never been on a travel adventure where everything unfolded as planned.  Canceled flights, trip altering injuries, less than pleasant interactions with other human beings…things happen.  If you can enter the mindset to expect the unexpected, these unforeseen events can be navigated more successfully.  Accepting this truth can also prevent us from developing unrealistic expectations of the perfect trip.
  • Smile – Try it, trust me.
